Forty-six lakh people, and it doubled in four days

Every number below is from the Bihar Disaster Management Department's bulletin as reported on 11 September 2026. We are publishing the state's figures rather than our own, because we have not been there and have no count of our own to offer.

The fifteen districts: Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura and Araria. Three of them — Araria, Purnea and Katihar — are a few hours' drive from our base in Siliguri. That proximity is the only reason a foundation our size has any business looking at Bihar at all.

No death toll appears here on purpose. The state has not published one for this event, and the figures circulating online belong to earlier Bihar floods. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with a number from 2017.

What we have actually done in Bihar so far: nothing

This is the part most appeal pages skip, so it goes first. As of today, Humrahi Foundation has not been to Bihar for this flood. No volunteer of ours has crossed into the affected districts. No relief material has been bought or moved. No organisation there has agreed to work with us. There is no Bihar field report, because there is no Bihar fieldwork.

What we have is a base a few hours from three of the affected districts, a vehicle, a collection point in Siliguri that already runs year-round, and two responses behind us this year that we published in full — Assam in August and Nepal in September. That is the whole of our credential for this.

How we work, and why it makes this page look empty. We do not arrive in a district we do not know and start distributing next to people who were already there. In Assam we went in behind the Nine Story Foundation. In Nepal we went in behind KarmaYog Foundation, who ran that operation while we contributed towards the supplies, moved them and worked the handover. Bihar needs the same thing and we have not found it yet. Until we do, the honest status of this appeal is open, funded, and waiting on a door. Since there is nothing to show you from Bihar, here is what we did in the last two

Every frame and every second of footage below is from Assam or Nepal, not from Bihar, and all of it is ours. We are showing it because an appeal opened before the work has nothing else to be judged on. It is not here to suggest we have been to Bihar. We have not.

One introduction is worth more to us than most donations

We are looking for an organisation already working in the flooded districts of Bihar — a local NGO, a relief collective, a gurudwara or temple trust running a kitchen, a panchayat-level group, anyone who is already there and can account in writing for what they distribute. Preference for Araria, Purnea, Katihar, Madhepura or Khagaria, because our vehicle can reach those and come back.

What we are offering is small and specific: money towards supplies, a vehicle out of Siliguri, and people who will work the distribution rather than photograph it. What we are not offering is a logo on somebody else's work.

• You run or know such a group. Tell us who they are. We will do the checking.
• You are from one of these districts. You know who is actually turning up. That is information we cannot buy.
• You work in relief or government there. Tell us what is already covered, so we do not duplicate a kitchen that exists.

Bihar is domestic, which changes the arithmetic entirely: there is no customs border, no crossing to wait at, and goods bought in Siliguri can be in Araria the same day a partner says yes. Before you give, the honest version. You would be funding a response that has not started, run by people who have not been to Bihar, through a partner who has not been found. We think that is still worth doing, because the alternative is starting the fundraise after the need peaks. But you should know exactly what you are buying. If we have not begun spending this in Bihar within sixty days of the appeal opening, we will say so on this page and contact every donor to it with the choice of a refund or of redirecting the gift to our work in Siliguri. Three strands, and how far along each honestly is

The same three-column status we published for Nepal, kept for Bihar so the two can be compared. Two of these are a flat no today.

Bihar has no border in the way, so goods work here

This is the one respect in which Bihar is easier than Nepal. There is no customs post between Siliguri and Araria, so the collection we already run year-round can supply a Bihar distribution directly, without anything being couriered or cleared.

• Sealed dry food — rice, dal, flattened rice, biscuits, anything unopened and in date.
• Clean clothes and bedding — wearable, washed, sorted. Blankets and bedsheets especially.
• Tarpaulin, buckets, soap, sanitary pads — the things a camp runs short of in week two, not week one.

Drop-offs go to our Siliguri collection point, which takes these the whole year round for local work and will hold them for Bihar once there is somewhere to take them. Where every number here came from

1. What we are not claiming. We have not been to Bihar, we have no partner there, we have distributed nothing, and we are publishing no beneficiary figure of our own. Nothing on this page is a Humrahi statistic. When that changes, the field report will say so with our own photographs and our own numbers, and this section will carry the revision.
